Bayelsa State was created on October 1, 1996 through a pronouncement by Late General Sani Abacha.
There are 8 Local Government Areas: Yenagoa, Sagbama, Ekeremor, Southern Ijaw, Kolokuma/Opokuma, Ogbia, Nembe and Brass.
